Health FAQ

Your Safety and Comfort are Our PriorityAt our facility, we believe that a focused dog starts with a clean and healthy environment. We take great pride in maintaining a space that meets high standards of hygiene, ensuring that you and your pup can train with peace of mind. From sanitization to regular cleanings, we do the heavy lifting so you can focus on those "good pup" moments.

If your DOG is ill, or not feeling well:

At Alaska Dog Sports, the health and safety of all dogs and handlers is our top priority. If your dog is showing signs of illness, please keep them at home, You are still welcome to attend and see the process, and receive homework:
Signs your dog may be too sick to attend class:
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Fever, lethargy, or unusual fatigue
  • Persistent coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge
  • Eye or ear infections with discharge
  • Any other contagious condition diagnosed by a veterinarian
Your dog may return to class once:
  • Symptoms have resolved or are under veterinary treatment, and
  • Your dog is behaving normally and able to participate safely
While in class, instructors may adjust exercises or spacing to ensure the comfort and safety of all dogs and handlers.
This policy helps prevent the spread of contagious illnesses and ensures a healthy, safe environment for everyone.

Consult with your Veterinarian if:

  • Recent surgery (spay/neuter, orthopedic, dental, mass removal, etc.)
  • Sedation or anesthesia within the past few days
  • Stitches, staples, drains, or healing incisions
  • Recent hospitalization
  • Strains or sprains
  • Limping (even if mild or intermittent)
  • Back or neck pain
  • Joint swelling or stiffness
  • Diagnosed arthritis flare-ups
  • Suspected soft tissue injuries
  • Starting new medications that may affect energy, balance, or behavior
  • Pain management treatment
  • Heart or respiratory conditions under treatment

Or if they have any Behavioral Changes like:
  • Sudden increase in fear, anxiety, or aggression
  • Unusual lethargy or hyperactivity
  • Signs of discomfort during normal activity

Training requires physical movement, focus, and interaction with other dogs. Ensuring your dog is fully recovered helps prevent re-injury and keeps class safe and productive for everyone.

If you’re unsure whether your dog is ready to return, please consult your veterinarian — and feel free to check in with us as well.

If you are ill, or not feeling well:

At Alaska Dog Sports, we follow current public health guidance for respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and other seasonal viruses.
If you are feeling sick, please stay home. You can email us to receive a digital copy of your homework.
This includes:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Body aches or chills
  • Any new or worsening respiratory symptoms
You may return to class when:
  • Your symptoms are improving, and
  • You have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
After returning, consider wearing a mask for a few days if you are recovering from a respiratory illness. This helps both you and those you contact, as your system has a chance to recover and strengthen, and not take something else on board, as well as mitigate the chance of your sharing what you had.
Masks are always welcome but not required in our facilities.
Your instructor will continue to have final say over class activities and may adjust spacing or exercises if needed for group comfort
